The Basics of Fit

Learn Why Fit is a Feeling

Basics of Fit

The key basics to know about fit are:

  • “Best” or “perfect” fit is a feeling - only the customer can really know how perfectly a shoe fits. “Perfect” or “best” fitting shoes are the ones that the customer feels most comfortable in.
  • Everyone's foot shape is unique and different across multiple measurements and dimensions. So just because two people wear the same size, doesn’t mean they have the same feet.
  • Each shoe style is only a "perfect fit" for a certain range of feet.

In the footwear industry, the foot length measurement is often what's primarily (or even only) used to determine shoe size. But, depending on a person's special foot shape and attributes, the heel-to-toe length measurement is not always the best attribute to refer to for a customer.

Example: If your customer's foot length measures at a size 10, but you notice that they have a much higher than average width and a higher than average instep height, then they will most likely need a larger size to accommodate this extra volume and width.
