Here are 4 main best practices that will keep your scanner healthy and working well for you and prevent most, if not all, potential issues.
Scanner Maintenance:
- Keep your scanner online as often as possible (everyday)
- Keep iPad/tablet software up to date at all times
- Clean your scanner (everyday)
- Be mindful of the scanner placement (avoid collisions and accidents)
The most unique feature of the Corian scanner tops is that they are made up of synthetic, acrylic-based material, but mimic the appearance of natural stone. This material is hard, durable and non-porous. Owing to its non-porous surface, maintaining these scanner tops is not too difficult. However, they are susceptible to damage due to scratches and heat exposure.
How to Clean:
With any of the cleaning methods below, it is important to be careful with the black markings on the scanner top. Avoid scrubbing the black lines and dots as there is a risk of damaging the paint if too much force is applied. Avoid using window cleaners, as they can leave a waxy build-up that dulls the surface, and always avoid using cleaning products containing alcohol, as alcohol damages both the corian and the black paint. When cleaning, always clean using a circular motion.
#1. Daily maintenance: Although liquids cannot penetrate Corian, it is best to wipe up spills and dirt as they appear. Use wet wipes (non-alcoholic such as baby wipes) or a damp cloth to remove dust and smudges. Isopropyl alcohol that's not stronger than 70% can also be used to disinfect the scanner top.
#2. Weekly/bi-weekly: Use a mild liquid dishwashing detergent. Take a tub of warm water and add a few drops of dishwashing detergent/soap in it. Dip a sponge or any other non abrasive piece of cloth (e.g. microfibre cloths) into this soapy solution and rub it over the surface of the counter. Then rinse it off with a clean sponge and water. Finally, wipe off the water and pat the surface dry.
To clean the camera lenses, use screen wipes intended for computer screens and cell phones.
Note: Do not use a green Scotch-Brite pad, or any similar rough scorching pad, on the surface as this will dull the surface.
#3. Deep clean: To clean tough and greasy stains, first apply the steps in the weekly/bi-weekly clean. Afterwards, ammonia-based cleaners or commercially available cleaners (without alcohol) will remove most remaining dirt and residue, all of which can safely be used on the scanner tops. For tougher dirt and residue, we recommend using the product Stone Care International Granite and Stone Cleaner and Polish for best results as it has a polishing effect to it. Apply a generous amount of the cleaner on the surface and rub it thoroughly with a clean, dry towel. Then wash off with warm water. Lastly, soak up all the excess water with a dry towel or cloth.
Corian surfaces can handle common household and commercial cleaners such as:
- Ammonia
- Powdered abrasive cleaners with bleach
- Strong detergents
- Oxalic and solutions
- Dilute hydrochloric acid solution
- Dilute phosphate solutions
Note: Ensure that the cleaning detergents do not come in contact with the black lines on the scanner. It is imperative that the greatest care and patience is taken into account when deep cleaning the scanner tops. If the black markings do come into contact with any cleaning detergent, immediately flush the surface with warm water.
Some chemicals are not compatible with Corian surfaces. Therefore avoid contact with:
- Alcohol
- Strong chlorinated solvents
- Chloroform
- Ketones
- Methylene chloride (paint removers)
- Very strong acids such as concentrated sulfuric and hydrochloric acids
- Acid drain cleaners
- Window cleaners
Surfaces exposed to these agents should be promptly flushed with water. Contact for even a short period of time can cause surface damage, spots, or staining.
